"Recovery
Management and the Long Haul: Tips, Tools, and Techniques"

This presentation
introduces the guiding principles of recovery self-management with practical
examples and field-proven intervention. The self-management of symptoms and
treatment are explored from a family perspective. This interactive workshop
addresses a recovery-oriented model, the value of understanding symptom patterns
and triggers, restorative strategies, the roles of crises and re-integration,
the value of “teachable moments”, and the challenges of the long haul.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the core concepts and benefits of the recovery management model.
- Describe the roles of and interactions between consumers and family members in
supporting recovery.
- Identify the common challenges associated with recovery management, as well as
respective coping responses.
Paul Keisling, MSW, is the Executive Director of Project Transition, which
consists of seven apartment-based therapeutic communities for adults with
serious mental illness, including coexisting substance abuse. His is a clinical
social worker who has worked closely with Project Transition consumers and
families for nearly thirty years. Paul has presented to NAMI, consumer, and
professional audiences. He has also served as a facilitator for NAMI’s Family to
Provider training program.

"Now and Then: An Intimate Look at the Effects of PTSD in Combat Veterans
from Vietnam to the Middle East"

- Participants will gain knowledge in the overall effects of five decades of
combat
related PTSD among veterans and their families.
- Participants will gain vital knowledge in helping the combat veterans navigate
resources through existing VA benefits.
- Participants will gain necessary skills and insight into how combat veterans
respond
and to treatment both during and after deployment.
Tom Pinder has been a member of the Veterans Administration for 27 years and
specialized in PTSD and sexual trauma for the last 15 years. He currently works
for the Elkton Veterans Center in Cecil County, Maryland. Tom served his country
in Vietnam as a member of the United States Marine Corps.

There: Making Progress with Emotionally Challenged Students in a Public School
Setting"

Objectives
- Participants will gain a general understanding regarding techniques for
creating
a collaborative treatment program for individuals within the public school
system.
- Participants will develop knowledge regarding the various layers of support
within
school systems to assist with behavior management.
- Participants will learn the importance of realistic goal setting and identify
areas of
targeted improvement that are appropriate within the school system. Behavior
strategies will be provided along with hands on opportunity to apply knowledge
gained throughout the presentation.
Carrie L. Kemether began her undergraduate experience at Washington College in
Chestertown, Maryland where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology
with a minor in Sociology. She continued on to Regent University to complete a
Master of Arts Degree in Community Counseling. From there, she attended the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for three years focusing on
Clinical Health Psychology. She is presently in the dissertation phase of her
PhD in Human Services through Capella University and works as a Behavior
Specialist with the Cecil County Public School System.
